Read this first. The operational content on CHT's COVID-19 update page describes public health directions issued during the 2020–21 pandemic response in Victoria. Those directions have been revoked and no longer apply. Two of the agencies named on it no longer exist under those names. Nothing on this page should be treated as a current instruction about how CHT operates or what is required of a hospitality workplace.
What remains genuinely useful is the training. This page sets out what is out of date, what replaced it, and the infection control qualification CHT holds on scope — which outlived the pandemic settings and is still nationally recognised.
What is out of date on the original page
CHT's page describes a set of arrangements from the height of Victoria's pandemic response:
| Stated on the page | Current position |
|---|---|
| Physical distancing of 1.5 metres | Revoked — no COVID-specific distancing direction applies to RTO delivery |
| One person per four square metres, fewer than 100 people in enclosed spaces | Revoked — density quotients no longer apply |
| Education as an "essential reason to leave your premises" | Revoked — stay-at-home directions have long since ended |
| DHHS contact tracing on confirmed cases | DHHS was abolished in 2021, split into the Department of Health and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing |
| "Department of Education and Training" | Renamed — Victoria's department is now the Department of Education |
| "At this stage we do not have any confirmed cases" | A statement about a moment in 2020; not meaningful now |
None of this reflects poorly on the training. It reflects a page that was accurate when written and was never retired.
What is still current: the infection control skill set
CHT holds HLTSS00066 Infection control Skill Set (Food Handling) on its scope of registration. The skill set contains one unit:
| Code | Title |
|---|---|
HLTINFCOV001 |
Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures |
This is a nationally recognised skill set from the HLT Health Training Package, not a COVID-era certificate of attendance. It covers hand hygiene and hand care, routine surface cleaning, use of personal protective equipment, waste disposal, hazard identification and risk assessment for infection control, implementing control measures in a workplace, and general knowledge of infection and transmission.
Completing it produces a Statement of Attainment — the correct instrument for a skill set, as distinct from a qualification.
The unit was introduced during the pandemic but is not limited to it. Infection prevention is an ongoing requirement in food handling, aged care and disability support settings, all three of which sit within CHT's registered scope.
HLTSS00066 is notable for another reason: of the 76 skill sets on CHT's scope of registration, it is close to the only one named anywhere in CHT's marketing. The rest are effectively invisible to anyone reading the website. See /courses and /workplace-training for what is actively promoted.
What actually governs food businesses now
For a hospitality business, the durable obligations are in food safety law rather than pandemic directions:
- Food Safety Supervisor requirements under Standard 3.2.2A of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, which applies to category 1 and category 2 food businesses and requires FSS currency to be maintained.
- Food handler skills and knowledge, the baseline obligation covered by CHT's food handling course and its virtual delivery.
- Work health and safety duties, which are general and ongoing, not pandemic-specific.
The food safety supervisor page sets out how the FSS requirement differs by state — New South Wales in particular issues its own certificate through a separate process.
Common questions
Are there still COVID restrictions on CHT's classes?
No. The directions described on the original page were revoked. For CHT's current arrangements, contact them directly — see /contact.
Is the infection control training still available?
HLTSS00066 remains on CHT's scope of registration. Whether it is currently scheduled is a question for CHT.
Is HLTINFCOV001 still a current unit?
It is on CHT's scope. As with any unit, confirm currency on the National Register at training.gov.au before relying on it.
What do I get for completing the skill set?
A Statement of Attainment for HLTINFCOV001. A skill set is not a qualification and does not produce a testamur.
Where should I check current public health advice?
The Victorian Department of Health and the Australian Government Department of Health. Do not rely on this page or CHT's for current health directions.
